Perseverance Begins

PERSEVERANCE

There is a current trend of choosing a word for the year. I decided to try it this year and for some reason “perseverance” jumped up and wanted to be the word.

Once you have chosen the word, what do you do with it?

Well, I decided to start out with the very basic task of defining the word.

Dictionary.com

1. steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles or discouragement.

2. Theology. continuance in a state of grace to the end, leading to eternal salvation.

For people who know me well, it would be apparent why I would choose this word. Quite simply, it is the story of my life. I have had to persevere through a lot of things in my life – some rather ugly. I won’t go into detail here. My point is not to rehash all of my difficulties. Sufficed to say, I personally know a lot about perseverance.

I also wanted to look at this from a Biblical viewpoint. I believe that my perseverance came from my faith, from the Holy Spirit working in me. On my own, I would not have persevered through all that I have been through.

So, in this blog, I am going to explore passages in the Bible that talk about perseverance. I am going to ask two questions that I have found helpful when going through my Bible. 1. What is the context? 2. What does this passage mean to me?
